I just read an article at the National Public Radio (NPR) news site in which an academic philosopher, Travis Rieder, a philosopher at Johns Hopkins University, believes that Americans should stop having so many kids.  He believes more children will increase Global Warming.  He is quoted in the article stating:

Maybe we should protect our kids by not having them, the situation is bleak, it’s just dark … Population engineering, maybe it’s an extreme move. But it gives us a chance...  Richer nations [should] do away with tax breaks for having children and actually penalize new parents… The penalty should be progressive, based on income, and could increase with each additional child.

How do you ask someone to stop having children or dictate that you can only have one child per couple, is that fair to them?

On my thought about dictating that a couple can only have one child, if you think that I am taking that thought too far then let us look at what The Sierra Club said about that.  David Brower, the first executive director of The Sierra Club, stated in an interview:

Childbearing [should be] a punishable crime against society, unless the parents hold a government license … All potential parents [should be] required to use contraceptive chemicals, the government issuing antidotes to citizens chosen for childbearing

A “government license”!

What people who advocate this position do not ponder is the technical advancements in farming and pollution control that lies ahead.  We have no idea what the future holds for us in those areas as well as others.  Remember the Wright brothers made the first controlled sustained flight of a powered heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17, 1903.  That was only 113 years ago.  We must remember that only 58 years later man made its first flight into space.

Are you concerned about population control and its effects on our planet and if so would you advocate for population control?  If you do advocate for population control how would you see that law being applied and who decides who and how many children a person can have?

I know many of us see how some people raise their children and we say they should not have had children but in reality who are we to say so.

Let’s talk about this today on The Live with Renk Show which airs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon. To let me know your thoughts during the show please call (269) 441-9595.

Or please feel free to start a discussion and write your thoughts in the comment section.
