First Person Charged In Calhoun County After Untested Rape Kits Get Tested

The first, and likely not the last, sexual assault cold-case in Battle Creek was reopened with charges this week.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that 24-year-old David Hull was arraigned Wednesday on a third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge, for allegedly assaulting a teenage girl in December of 2013. This was the first case brought to court after some 300 untested rape kits began to be investigated.

Special Assistant Attorney General Michelle Richardson was appointed to the Calhoun County Sexual Assault Kit Investigation Team last year by Attorney General Bill Schuette. Using DNA, these old kits could lead to charges if enough evidence can be gathered, and alleged victims do choose to go forward.

David Hull could get 30 years in prison, and is currently in jail already for not complying with Michigan’s Sex Offender Registry.
