If there's anything good about the end of summer, it's the end of major road construction projects that at the very least are annoyances.

MDOT reports that work has completed the reconstruction of the US-131 Business Route (BR)/Stadium Drive intersection at Drake Road in Kalamazoo. All lanes are opening today.

But...you should expect some intermittent single-lane closures for the rest of the week as crews work on new traffic signals, pavement markings and other wrap-up work.

The new intersection features dual turn lanes from southbound Drake Road to eastbound Stadium Drive, and from westbound Stadium Drive to northbound Drake Road. There also are other improvements to lane alignment and turn lanes, all intended to make traffic flow safer and smoother at an intersection and interchange with US-131. This area is an important commercial and local corridor, with access to downtown Kalamazoo and Western Michigan University.

Before you get too happy, next year, MDOT will be rebuilding the Stadium Drive bridge over US-131, including the ramps, in the final phase of this two-year project. Construction in 2015 will require lane closures on Stadium Drive, with some ramp closures.
