I don't have to tell you that gas prices have spiked. Prices at the pump haven't been this high since 2014. Let's see what was happening in the Mall City back then.

The big talk in Kalamazoo in 2014 was the Western Michigan University football team. Even though the Broncos uniforms were terrible, head coach P.J. Fleck was name MAC Coach of the Year. In fact, when Brady Hoke was fired at University of Michigan, there was speculation Fleck might be headed to the Big House. He assured MLive, "I love being at Western Michigan. I love how people believe in me here and I love our players. There's not even room to talk about that."

Meanwhile, former WMU baseball hopeful Frankie Ballard hit the top of the charts for the 2nd time as "Sunshine & Whiskey" went to #1 on the charts. Back on campus, students tried to set the world record for most people wearing sunglasses at night but failed.

"Selfie" and "hastag" were added to the dictionary in 2014 and the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral. Sadly, Robin Williams' suicide vaulted him to the top of the "Most Searched in Google List." In Kalamazoo, we were still enjoying the best movie experience anywhere at Alamo Drafthouse.

The Seahawks routed the Broncos in Superbowl XLVII and the United States won gold at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Mark Shook took the checkered flag at Kalamazoo Speedway in the Great Country 102.5 car. At the end of the year, Kalamazoo was battling an outbreak of the flu with more than 3 times the nukber of cases in 2013.

That's a brief look back at 2014 in Kalamazoo, hopefully we can soon look forward to lower gas prices.
