The Kalamazoo County Commission is considering the possibility of creating a municipal identification program.

MLive reports that the idea was proposed at the board’s meeting Tuesday evening, by Comissioner Larry Provancher, and it wasn’t approved, but several members agreed to look further into the idea.

The idea behind a county ID is to allow those who might struggle with getting a state ID, like illegal immigrants or homeless residents, to do things like open a bank account, or access municipal services.

The proposed Kalamazoo program is based on a similar program that was implemented in Washtenaw County.
