Kalamazoo Man Convicted in Murder of Infant

A 22-year-old man has been convicted of the December 2012 death of his former girlfriend’s one-year-old daughter. A Kalamazoo County Circuit Court jury found Toren Hains guilty of one count each of felony murder and first-degree child abuse. He faces a sentence of mandatory life in prison without the chance of parole.  Zoie Grace Johnston of Oshtemo Township died at a Kalamazoo hospital of head trauma. At the time she was admitted to the hospital, the toddler had marijuana in her system and a blood-alcohol level of .087 percent.  Police and prosecutors said Zoie was under the care of Hains at the time she suffered the injuries that led to her death. At the time, he was living with the toddler and her mother at their apartment near Kalamazoo.  No sentencing date has been set.
