A Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer was hurt Wednesday afternoon while attempting to arrest a suspect.

Officers had been attempting to catch someone known for driving on a suspended license, who had fled from them the previous night. Thus, they say, they had probable cause to arrest him.

Authorities moved in to arrest the suspect in the area of Maple St. and S. Burdick St around 5:20pm Wednesday, and when officers were getting out of their patrol vehicle the suspect drove away; he ended up striking the patrol car’s door as he left, leaving an officer hurt. The driver ended up getting away.

The officer was taken to Bronson Hospital to be evaluated, and was released with a minor injury.

The KDPS is now searching for a 19-year-old Kalamazoo resident, on charges of felonious assault of a police officer, fleeing and eluding, and driving with a suspended license. The incident continues to be investigated, and anyone who has information is asked to contact the KDPS directly, or to leave an anonymous tip with Silent Observer.
