Oh, fudge, what now? Here's what you need to know about the 2018 Mackinac Bridge Walk if you're planning on travelling between Michigan's peninsulas on Labor Day weekend.

Walk the bridge like you never have before! This year, the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk will start from both St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, allowing you to turn around when you get to the halfway point of the span or complete the trip to the other side.

As the Michigan Department of Transportation notes on their YouTube video, the Michigan State Police and Department of Homeland Security recommend the bridge again be closed to regular vehicle traffic during the walk and the 2 center lanes remain open for emergency vehicles.

Here's the schedule for activity at the bridge on September 3:

  • 6:30 Bridge closes to vehicle traffic
  • 6:40 Bridge Run begins, travelling South from St. Ignace to Mackinac City
  • 7:00  Michigan Governor Snyder leads the walk from St. Ignace as walkers begin from Mackinac City simultaneously.
  • Noon Bridge reopens to public traffic.

If you choose to walk completely across the bridge, you must cross the middle by 10am, and remember, there are no shuttle buses this year, so you'll have to find your own ride back. If you are ambitious, you can get an early start and walk across the bridge and back for a 10 mile round trip.
