June 25th is a special day for the Mackinac Bridge as it is the day the important link between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas was formally dedicated in 1958. But the bridge also had its 1 millionth crossing on the exact same day in 1998, the 40th anniversary of the dedication.

Traveling between the two peninsulas was very challenging before the bridge was built as motorists had to use a ferry to get back and forth or just drive around Lake Michigan through Illinois and Wisconsin. The official website for the Mackinac Bridge Authority put together this nice photo collage highlighting some fun facts and important dates in the history of the Mighty Mac to honor the anniversary.
