A 33-year-old Illinois man was in court and charged in Kalamazoo yesterday in the stabbing of a woman Tuesday afternoon. Michael Van Mackins was charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Great Bodily Harm Less than Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon and two counts of Unlawful Imprisonment. Mackins allegedly stabbed the woman in the face while holding her captive in a car in Portage. A plainclothes officer spotted Mackins still armed with the knife and shot him in the leg. Mackins was treated at a local hospital before his arrest. The officer has been put on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
