We have been hearing quite a bit lately from all levels of schooling and pro football how they are shying away from and protesting patriotic symbols.

High schools have been banning the flag at their football games, pro football players are refusing to stand for the national anthem and so on.

Finally we have a high school team that did not shy away from showing their patriotism and that school is right here in Michigan. That team was the freshman football team at Lapeer High School.

Mlive.com is reporting that the freshman Lapeer football team took a stand, literally.  The team was informed before their game at Carman-Ainsworth High School in Flint Township that the national anthem would not be played before their game. Did they take this sitting down, no!

The Lapeer freshman football team did not just sit back and take it, like many teenagers would, they stood tall and proud and walked to the sidelines to stand and salute their countries flag, our countries flag. Then they sung the national anthem with no music.

I cannot be more proud of them.  I think a tear would have actually come to my eye if I had been there.

Lapeer High School athletic director Shad Spilski was quoted in the article stating:

We're just super proud of our guys to overcome that situation and take it upon themselves to sing the national anthem. We couldn't be prouder

The Superintendent Eddie L. Kindle of Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools said the national anthem was played prior to the junior varsity game held later in the night.  He was quoted in the article stating:

Like most schools in the state of Michigan, we choose to play the national anthem prior to the highest level of competition.  That is common and typical in many communities in Michigan. We have never and will never refuse to play the national anthem.

I believe the Superintendent but it sure is great to hear what those fine young men did that August 31st night.  A night they may never forget, a night that gives hope to some of us on the front lines of protecting our heritage and constitutional rights. A night that those boys showed the American spirit.

I stand proud with the Lapeer freshman football team.

What was nice to hear is that when the team started to sing the national anthem the players and fans on the Carman-Ainsworth sideline also stood to salute our flag while the Lapeer team sung and they all cheered when it was over.

Maybe we still have a chance.

Let’s talk about this today on The Live with Renk Show which airs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon. To let me know your thoughts during the show please call (269) 441-9595.
