The fire that has burned a mulch plant in Mottville near the Indiana border is 30 miles as the crow files from Portage. But smoke from that massive fire has reached the Kalamazoo area.

The Portage Department of Public Safety shared the news this morning (June 28) on Facebook:

City of Portage residents, and surrounding areas, can expect the odor of smoke for the next week, depending on the wind direction. This is coming from the wood chip fire in Mottville in St. Joseph County.

The fire began Monday (June 26) afternoon at the facility on M-103 south of the hamlet of Mottville between US 12 and the Indiana state line. Though it is contained, the fire is expected to smolder for several days.
