Did the Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist ring a bell with you if you're a Detroit Red Wings fan? The horse is indeed named after Red Wings Right Wing Gustav Nyquist.

How did that name come to be? According to a Wall Street Journal article about the names of each of the entrants into the 2016 Kentucky Derby,

Owner J. Paul Reddam, who won the Derby in 2012 with I’ll Have Another, loves the Detroit Red Wings and named this year’s Derby favorite for forward Gustav Nyquist. He’s also used Lidstrom, Hudler and Zetterberg.

Nyquist is undefeated in 8 career races, held off its nearest competitor by 1 1/4 lengths and takes its next step toward the Triple Crown with the Preakness Stakes.
