A Battle Creek man charged with the death of five bicyclists in June will go to trial.

Charles Pickett was in Kalamazoo Circuit Court Wednesday and was found competent to stand trial in the case following a psychiatric evaluation. Authorities believe Pickett was behind the wheel of a pick-up truck on North Westnedge June 7th, hitting a bicycle group and leaving the scene. Five people were killed and four were injured.

Investigators learned that Pickett was on a mix of pain pills and muscle relaxers at the time. He has been charged with five counts each of operating while intoxicated causing death and second-degree murder, and four counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.

A preliminary hearing has been set for September 21st.
