Saturday’s Full Moon Will Be…Blue?

This Saturday we will have another full moon pretty much like we do every month but what is different about this one...it will be blue.

According to WOOD, if you are a fan of astronomy then you are probably aware that every few years there is a full moon that is known as a blue moon, but it may not be exactly what you are thinking.

As you know we have four seasons every year and with each season being 3 months long. Each full moon pops up roughly once per month but it is not exact but close. Because this is not an exact science you may see 2 full moons in the same month or as much as four full moons that occur between and equinox and a solstice.

On March 20 of 2019 we had vernal equinox and then a fool moon on the 21st. Our second full moon was April 16 so this Saturday will be third moon which is called the blue moon.

2018 had two blue moons, one in January and a second in March. This Saturday's blue moon will be the fourth in the past decade. After this Saturday, the next blue moon will occur August 22, 2021. So I guess that is where the phrase "once in a blue moon" comes from.

It is rare for there to be two full moons in a season since the last time it happened was 1961-1962. This won't happen again until 2314-2315...I think we will miss that one. Lol!

One thing is for sure, the blue moon will not actually make the moon a blue color. Certain conditions in our atmosphere can make the moon look blue but its just reflections from earth.

You won't have to stay up late to see the blue moon since it will be full and visible during the day Saturday at 5:11 p.m.
