The railroad crossing at Spencer Street near Porter Street in Battle Creek will be closed down permanently, starting Monday.

In a release, The City of Creek Says that the railroad crossing will be blocked off, while Michigan Department of Transportation Office of Rail workers will improve the stretch of railway, to improve the Michigan rail line from Battle Creek to Jackson.

Once the improvements are completed, the railroad crossing will remain closed, as part of the City's implementation of "quiet zones" in Downtown Battle Creek.  Quiet Zones will be areas where trains aren't allowed to sound their horns outside of emergencies, and as a trade-off for safety, crossings will be closed.

Other crossings being closed include the crossings at Fountain and Division Streets.
