State Gives You “A Couple Of Days Off” From Road Construction This Weekend

I know it's not the biggest news in the world, but it's something to lessen the stress.

M-DOT is taking a break from most of its road construction projects, for the Labor Day weekend.

In a release, State Transportation Director Kirk Steudle explained, "Labor Day weekend represents the last chance for many to take a summer trip."

While road work is suspended from Friday through early Tuesday morning, there's still going to be headaches. First and foremost, is the decision to close the Mackinac Bridge for the annual Bridge Walk, and adding to that situation is this week's news that I-75 will be shut down at Gaylord ahead of the Bridge Walk.

Southbound I-75 and US-2 traffic will be stopped at Exit 344 on the north side of the bridge; northbound I-75 traffic will be stopped at Exit 337 on the south end. Michigan State Police will have additional personnel along routes approaching the bridge, and may redirect traffic if needed. Portable bathrooms will be placed along US-2 for several miles west of the bridge, water and snack stations will be located on US-2 and I-75 north and south of the bridge

Also, there are some projects that will still block traffic, etc. The immediate Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area isn't really affected, but surround us is. Here's just a few of the bigger ones.

• If you're headed west on M-6, it's closed between I-196 and Byron Center Avenue, with one lane open in each direction between US-131 and Byron Center Avenue.
• If you're headed up North for Labor Day Weekend, US-131, in northern Kent County, will have traffic shifted between M-57 (14 Mile Road) and White Creek Avenue.
• If you're headed for Chicago for the weekend, I-94, in Berrien County has two eastbound lanes open from Bridgman (Exit 16) to Stevensville (Exit 23).
