Over the next couple of weeks I will be re-posting some of my columns written about Donald Trump in the 18 months leading up to his election as the 45th President of The United States. This is part of that series.

Donald Trump recorded his third big victory in a row this week on his way to the Republican nomination for President. His wins in New Hampshire, South Carolina and most recently Nevada shows Trump can win all over the country with very different kinds of electorates.

He has won with evangelicals in South Carolina much to the surprise of the Ted Cruz campaign that really thought they had that area wrapped up. He won the majority of Hispanics in Nevada much to the surprise of both Cruz and Marco Rubio, both of whom are Hispanic. Hispanic supporters also blows out of the water, the notion that Trumps comments about illegal aliens would somehow permanently turn that important voting block against him. Jorge Ramos the bombastic anchor of Univision did his level best on numerous occasions to destroy Trump with Hispanic voters. It flatly failed.

Taking to the podium Trump was clear, “We won with evangelicals, we won with young, we won with old, we won with highly educated, we won with poorly educated.”

So the big knock on Trump from the right is that he is not a real conservative and would be dangerous for America. He is clearly more conservative than Barack Obama.

So lets look at some of his policies. On border security Trump says it is time to close the border, enforce the laws we already have on the books and make sure we are safe. That sounds pretty conservative to me. On national security, Trumps says it is time to make sure the US military is rebuilt to a place where nobody wants to mess with us and if they do, they will be smashed without mercy. That sounds pretty conservative to me.

Trump says protecting America from predatory trade practices and making sure US workers, specifically the middle class, are protected is critical. Trump is a vocal critic of the Trans Pacific Partnership, a deal he says will cost America millions of jobs. By the way Republican's supporting full on free trade is not a great deal and a bit confusing too. We are the only country that does not protect our workers from cheap imports. Protecting American jobs is conservative in my way of thinking.

What about gun control? Well Donald Trump and his two sons, Donald Jr. and Erich are all NRA members. What else would you say about that? That’s about as conservative as you can be.

But Steve, he was a Democrat once and donated to people like Hillary Clinton say the critics. And so what? Lots of folks have changed political parties over the years. Hillary Clinton for example was once a Republican. In fact Hillary found evidence of voter fraud against Presidential candidate Richard Nixon in 1960 and then campaigned openly for Barry Goldwater in 1964 as head of the Young Republicans at her college. And Bernie Sanders was once a Democrat before deciding Josef Stalin’s view of the world should be his too and he became a Socialist.

So is Donald Trump conservative enough?

He is for real borders, national security and economic security as well. Call me crazy but that sounds alright to me.
