Everyone has a story about a vehicle they had or still have. Sometimes it's reminiscing about that old beater they drove in high school or some quirky gremlin that was inconvenient but also gave the vehicle some character. But the longer we have our vehicles, the more they become more than just transportation. They start earning a special place in our hearts and every mileage milestone becomes more significant. You get to 100,000, then 150,000, and then 200,000 and after that, usually you start to wonder... how long will it go?

So we decided to put it out there and see who in Southwest Michigan had the most durable rides. Here are a few of the posts from our Facebook page and at the bottom of this article, you can click the links to see all the responses from our Facebook page and my personal page.

The first one here was the highest mileage of any of the posts. Daniel Fox of Hillsdale has over 497,000 miles on his 2003 Chevy S-10! In fact of all vehicle brands, it seemed like Chevy was the one that was shared the most.

Our News Director Nico Berrios had a funny story about a truck he used to own...

My first vehicle was a 1996 Maza B2300, which is really just a Ford Ranger. When I bought it, it already had over 230k miles on it. It treated me well enough for about a year, but one summer it was just on the decline. Every week or so there'd be a new problem. The real beginning of the end was when I was attempting to park in a crowded parking lot; I had miscalculated getting into my spot, so I had to backup to readjust. However, when I tried to shift into reverse (it was a stick-shift) I just got this horrible grinding noise. I was stuck, halfway in the lane of travel, for about 30 minutes until one of my friends suggested I try shifting into reverse with the engine off. Lo and behold, it worked, and I got into the spot after that. But that became a recurring problem, and I ended up getting rid of that truck about a month later.

I am currently driving the car that has the most mileage of any I have ever owned. It's a 2005 Chevy Cobalt and was purchased in 2011 with around 90,000 miles. It has by far been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned and is still solid. It passed the 225,000 mark recently and I am hopeful it keeps going quite awhile longer. My wife and I have long fallen in love with this vehicle and whenever that dreadful day comes, we might actually shed a tear or two as silly as that might sound.

At the end of the day, vehicles are just objects. But the places we go and the memories we make whether it's a spontaneous road trip, a family vacation, or even just a lonely drive down a country road or along a city skyline at night, the miles we put behind us in them definitely makes our vehicles more than just a machine.
