Western Completes Sweep over No. 3 Ranked Denver
A big weekend sweep for the Western Michigan University hockey team, and a nice recovery after being swept last weekend by another highly ranked team, St. Cloud State.
Saturday night's 5-1 blowout over number three ranked Denver University comes on the heels of a 3-1 win Friday night, also at Lawson, and completed the weekend for the Broncos.
As pointed out by Adam Bodnar, this weekend was the first time in a long time Western was playing "healthy", and it showed. This sweep also avenges the sweep Denver put on Western in November in Colorado.
Friday night's effort was impressive as Western played for virtually half the third period shorthanded, and with the outstanding play of goalie Trevor Gorsuch and the penalty killing unit, held on for the win, with two goals from Ethen Frank and one from Hugh McGing for WMU.
Saturday night's game was a little easier as the Broncos opened with three first period goals and added two more in the second. Five different Bronco scored for Western.
Western heads to Omaha this coming weekend to play the last place Mavericks. The NCHC race has gotten increasingly more interesting with newly ranked No. 1 St. Cloud splitting their weekend series with North Dakota, and second place Minnesota-Duluth, just two points ahead of Western beat up on Omaha.
