Western Hosts Geography Bee On Friday
This is not so much about geography as it is about putting a spotlight on something positive going on around us. So much of everything is negative right now. Now here's the story of kids who are accomplishing something special.About one hundred of the best and brightest geography whizzes from around the state will be at the Fetzer Center on Friday, competing for a chance to travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Geographic Geography Bee.
The first round of state competion starts in the noon hour on Friday, and the finals are at 2:15 pm. The winner gets $200, a "National Geographic Visual Atlas of the World" and a trip to Washington, to represent Michigan in the National Geographic Bee Championship on May 20-23. With that also comes a chance to meet TV personality Mo Rocca who is hosting the event.
If you allow yourself to dream, the winner picks up $50,000 in scholarship money, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands on an expedition.
