Michigan has one of the lowest sales tax rates in the country at 6%, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't add up - especially when parents are dropping hundreds of dollars on back-to-school shopping.

Seventeen different states offer tax-free weekends prior to the beginning of the school year to help offset the cost of back-to-school shopping a bit for parents. So, why doesn't Michigan do the same? The answer isn't exactly clear.

Back in 2014, Senator Mark Jansen from Gaines Township introduced a bill that would create three sales tax holidays in the state. It was sent to the Senate Finance Committee, but seemingly stayed there.

As it turns out, Michigan was actually one of the first states to have a sales tax holiday. That was back in 1980 when the state offered tax breaks on cars. That didn't last long, though.

So, what do you think? Should Michigan have a tax-free weekend for back-to-school shopping?
