Yes, West Main Really Is That Bad And Yes, Something Is being Done

Driving West Main (M-43) Between US-131 and Pitcher Street feels like nothing more then a series of speed bumps intended to keep you at the posted 30 to 45 mph along the route through Kalamazoo. That doesn't seem to slow some people down and only serves to annoy others.

The good news is that it is finally being fixed and even upgraded. Sidewalk ramps have been upgraded to aid pedestrian traffic at street crossings for both safety and mobility.

The rest of the reconstruction plan, according to MDOT, is as follows.

July 5 - Aug. 3: Repaving between US-131 and Kendall Avenue. There will be nighttime single-lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Aug. 7 - Sept. 22: sidewalk ramp reconstruction between Kendall Avenue and Pitcher Street. There will be daily single-lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Railroad crossing reconstruction on Westnedge Avenue and West Kalamazoo Avenue will be Aug. 14 - 25.
Sept. 25 - Oct. 28: Repaving between Kendall Avenue and Pitcher Street. On eastbound M-43, there will be daily single-lane closures from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. On westbound M-43, there will be daily single-lane closures from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Railroad crossing reconstruction on West Michigan Avenue and North Park Street will be Sept. 11 - 22.

The worst has not yet begun so now is the time to start planning your alternate route.
