A chemical company has decided to stop their current testing of fungicides on several dozen dogs in southwest Michigan.

Earlier this month, The Humane Society of the United States revealed their results of an undercover investigation at the Charles River Laboratory in Mattawan; the lab had been feeding 36 beagles fungicides as part of a study for Corteva Agriscience, a subsidiary of DowDuPont. Corteva said they needed to do the study as part of requirements by health regulators in Brazil for the product.

However, the company announced Monday afternoon that they were able to receive a waiver from the Brazilian analogue to the Food and Drug Administration (Agencia Nacional de Vigilancia Sanitaria) to cease the testing on these dogs. The Detroit Free Press reports that the beagles had previously been scheduled to be euthanized at the end of the study in July, but Corteva says they will “make every effort to rehome the animals”.

Michigan law currently allows for the use of dogs and cats for research purposes.
