Are There Really More Americans On Food Stamps Than People Who Live In Canada?
Last month Republican Congressman from Ohio Jim Jordan Tweeted out the following:
Could that actually be true?
Well the people at CheckYourFact.com looked into the claim and found that Congressmen Jordan’s claim is 100% true.
The entire country of Canada has an estimated total population of 37 million people. How many people does the United States currently have on our food stamp rolls?
The answer to that is 40.3 million Americans in the fiscal year 2018.
Congressmen Jordan’s tweet linked to an article which discussed the debate over the new farm bill. Why the farm bill, because it includes funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.
This all had to do with a House bill which would have expanded the work requirements to include people up to age 59 and parents with children ages 6 and older. All of the Democrats in the House unanimously opposed it.
Just an interesting fact I thought you might want to know.
As a country we need to do as much as we can to help people transition from welfare to self-sufficiency. This will help them feel better about themselves and obviously help our country.
