Some bridges in Battle Creek are in a poor state, and City leaders will be considering an effort to change that next week.

The Battle Creek City Commission’s agenda for their meeting April 9 has a resolution on the consent agenda, that would see them supporting the rehabilitation of two bridges in the city. The first is the Burnham St. Bridge over the Kalamazoo River, and the second is the Union St. bridge over the Battle Creek River; according to the resolution, recent inspections have shown that these bridges suffer from cracking on the railings and deck surfaces among other problems.

While these bridges aren’t yet dangerous, they need repairs to prevent them from becoming so.

This resolution will see the city support an effort to secure funding from the state of Michigan and Federal government, with a total estimated cost for the project being $1.1 million; the state share is 15 percent, federal is 80 percent, and Battle Creek
would need to kick in 5 percent.

The resolution has the support of the Engineering Department.
