Charges Dismissed In Calhoun County Human Trafficking Case

An update to an article from early January, the charges against two Lansing area men for Human Trafficking in Calhoun County were dismissed on Friday.

Alexander Murray, 34, and Kevin Nemeth, 39, were in Calhoun County District Court for preliminary examinations after they were arrested in January. Both men were charged with transporting women for prostitution, accepting earnings from prostitution and human trafficking, involving two Lansing women, 23 and 25, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer. According to the Calhoun County prosecutor, one of the female victims recanted her original statements while the second victim did not appear for the Friday hearing. The investigation will remain ongoing.

The Battle Creek Police Department coordinated with several agencies in January, including the US Department of Homeland Security, the Ingham County Sheriff's Office, the Lansing Police Department, and the Michigan State Police on the investigation, after police received a tip on January 4; based on information regarding drugs and prostitution at a Battle Creek area hotel, 34-year-old Alexander Murray was arrested at the scene on warrants from Arizona, while the second suspect initially fled. Murray, along with 39-year-old Kevin Nemeth, were both arraigned January 11 on several charges including human trafficking, and were lodged in the Calhoun County Jail.

34 year old Alexander Murray still faces charges of kidnapping in Maricopa County, Arizona, in a similar case. Battle Creek police say he will be transported there to face those charges.
