Despite NCHC Protests, College Hockey Overtime Is Changing Again
The NCAA has decided to change and standardize college hockey overtime to a single 5 on 5 period, rather than the current 5 on 5, then 3 on 3. WMU's conference, The NCHC is not happy about it.
Boston College related site does a nice job of summing up the argument for keeping the status quo. But as
College Hockey News reports, the NCAA rules commitee vehemently believes "we are not the NHL".
Another question that has been asked since this ruling is "what about tournaments", like The Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit, which the WMU Broncos have won in recent years. It is believed that tournament organizer might be allowed to go to either 3 on 3 or a shootout, to allow advancement.
The change is not official yet, with the proposed rule change announced late last week and final approval in late July. In the interim, a comment period is underway.
