Fire Breaks Out On Unique U.S. Navy Ship That Was Built On The Great Lakes

A fire that happened aboard a U.S. Navy vessel that was built on the Great Lakes is still being investigated. According to the Maritime Executive, the USS Devastator was at a pier in Bahrain when the blaze occurred last week.

It happened at around 8:00 pm local time in Bahrain on Thursday. Crews aboard the USS Devastator, as well as four other ships and the NSA Bahrain Fire Department, responded to the fire. They were able to put out the fire in less than an hour. No injuries were reported and an official report on the extent of the damage has not been released at this time.

The Maritime Executive says the Devastator, a mine countermeasures ship, is one of 21 forward-deployed ships assigned to the U.S. 5th Fleet. It's built of wood and fiberglass to reduce the magnetic signature. and is one of the U.S. Navy's few remaining wooden-hulled vessels.

According to the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society, the vessel was built on the Great Lakes. Construction began in February 1987 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and the USS Devastator was completed and launched in June of 1988. It was commissioned by the U.S. Navy in October of 1990.
