This is What Was On Fire Yesterday (8/15) Near Downtown Kalamazoo
Yesterday, people near downtown Kalamazoo were rightfully concerned when they spotted a plume of smoke coming from somewhere nearby.
I somehow missed this entirely but yesterday, 8/15, someone on Kalamazoo's Reddit page asked,
What is burning on the east side of Kzoo? Big plumes of smoke and a large chunk of throughways blocked off by police on the east side near hop cat and the Bells cafe. Can't find any info on this closure anywhere. Anyone know what is going on?
Immediately, people began commenting with guesses. A user with the name lostnarwhal said: From here at HopCat, it looks like one of the storage units across the street from Old Dog caught fire. Bunch of fire trucks over there now.
The guess was repeated by a few other users with u/Euphoric-Git-Commits posting a link to this Twitter post:
Sure enough, it does look like the area near the Five Star Store It storage units that are close to Bell's Brewery. You can even see the sign for Food Dance in the second photo.
Here's the thing, even though these photos show a more precise location of the fire, we still don't know what caused it. In fact, I checked the social media pages for Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, both their Twitter and Facebook pages, and found no mention of the fire. I even checked the social media pages for Five Star Store It and found that it had not been updated since the beginning of 2020.
We also don't know if anyone was injured. However, since "no news is good news" sometimes applies, I hope that we didn't hear anything about injures because there was nothing to report.
I will update this article should I learn anything further.
While this storage unit was, hopefully, saved have you seen the new trend of turning shipping containers into homes? Check out this Airbnb:
