Free Meals Available to More Kalamazoo Students

Many families in our community rely on the free breakfast and lunch provided for food insecure children. Kalamazoo Public Schools in accordance with the 2010 Healthy Hungre-Free Kids Act have expanded the free breakfast and lunch program to nearly every elementary and middle school student in the district, regardless of income. According to an article from Mlive, the Interim Superintendent, Gary Start, said of the program, quote, "(Community Eligibility Provision) is a way we can use federal funds to feed more children. It’s always important for our children to have the best nutrition possible to enable them to be prepared to learn."

All 17 elementary schools and five middle schools in the district will benefit from this extended program, as will Kalamazoo Innovative Learning Program and Phoenix High School. Students at Loy Norrix and Kalamazoo Central are not included in the program, however the traditional free and reduced-price lunch guidelines, are still available to those households that qualify.
