Genetic DNA Testing May Be Used In Solving The JonBenet Ramsey Case
It's been 25 years since the death of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, and now investigators are looking at genetic DNA testing to try and solve the case.
In 1996 and 1997 the entire country was watching their televisions following the investigation of the murder of a 6-year-old beauty queen found dead in the basement at the family home on December 26, 1996.
JonBenet had a fracture to her skull, she was sexually assaulted and was strangled. The cause of death was "asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma." The death was classified as a homicide by the coroner's office.
JonBenet's parents John and Patricia Ramsey along with her 9-year-old brother Burke, we all considered suspects in the murder. At one point a grand jury voted to indict John and Patricia but the prosecutor decided not to charge the couple because of insufficient evidence. New DNA technology absolved the family in 2008.
No one has ever been charged for JonBenet's murder and the investigation has remained open for over two decades.
According to WOOD, in Colorado, the Boulder Police Department said 'it is actively reviewing genetic DNA testing processes to see if those can be applied to this case moving forward."
Investigators are looking at genetic genealogy to try and solve this cold case. DNA sequencing using familial DNA technology has solved numerous cold cases.
When DNA from a crime scene is not a match for anyone that is in the federal database, investigators use genetic genealogy that is used to find close relatives.
Investigators have been looking at DNA in this case for 20 years but have never found a match. They are hoping the new DNA testing will lead to closing this case once and for all.
