I knew the economy was doing well but I did not know it was doing this well right here in Michigan.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor there was only 3,791 unemployment insurance claims filed during the week of August 24th.

Let us put that number in perspective and you will understand why I believe it is such great news.

  • For the week of Jan. 10, 2009, in the middle of the “Great Recession”, 76,702 people submitted a claim. Remember the week of August 24, 2019 there was 3,791
  • In the week of Jan. 24, 2009, there were 363,212 people receiving unemployment benefits in Michigan. For the week of September 7, 2019 there was 35,946
  • On the week starting Sept. 7, 2019, there were 3,988 initial claims put in, the most recent data available. There were 35,946 people receiving unemployment benefits for the week of Sept. 7, 2019.

On top of that great news there is more, at least for job seekers.  According to the National Federation for Independent Business in August of this year 37% of U.S. small business owners said they had job openings they could not fill from the previous month, this is a new high for this survey.
