Calhoun County authorities have two people in custody accused of driving their vehicles at high speeds while apparently chasing each other in the Pennfield area early Thursday.

Just after midnight, a Sheriff's Deputy saw a sedan and full-size van speed by his parked cruiser on Capital Ave. NE near Park st. at estimated speeds of 70 mph on the ice and snow covered roadway. The deputy began a pursuit, but the two vehicles reportedly increased their speeds even more and he had to terminate the pursuit due to the dangerous conditions.

The vehicles were located a few minutes later near Pennfield High School but then took off again into a more rural area and a pursuit began again. The sedan eventually slid off the road and came to stop. A 20-year-old male driver from Battle Creek was taken into custody. The van continued on for a short while but also eventually slid off the road. a 21-year-old female driver from Allegan was arrested.

Investigations into the chase showed that the female and male had recently met in person and during their interaction the male allegedly took the female's money from her purse and fled in the sedan. The female began chasing him in the full size van.

The Battle Creek man was jailed for Fleeing and Eluding, Robbery, Possession of Counterfeit Bills, and several other traffic offenses. The Allegan woman was also arrested on a charge of Fleeing and Eluding.

Authorities will continue to investigate this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office at 269-781-0880.
