Indiana Toll Road Plans Largest Construction Project in 60 Years
Drive any of the Indiana Toll Road, the 157 mile roadway spanning the crown of the Hoosier State, and you might notice the highway is showing its age.
In an effort to bring the Toll Road up to modern standards, the private consortium that owns and operates the road, The Indiana Toll Road Concession Company, will spend $200 million over the next two years. According to the Chicago Tribune, the improvements include,
removing the existing asphalt down to the concrete base and replacing it with a 5-inch layer of new asphalt. It also calls for improvements to interchanges, replacing road shoulders, work on 53 bridges and the installation of fiber-optic cable aimed at improving information available to drivers.
Construction is expected to last through 2016-2017.
