Going out to the lake is one of the summertime activities that many people all over the country look forward to. Some people are fortunate enough to have their beach on the ocean while others are restricted to lakes, nonetheless everyone is enjoying the warm weather. Lakes allow for beachfront fun, swimming, jet skis, fishing, paddle boating, and more aquatic fun during the hottest months of the year.

Residents and visitors of Michigan are some of the luckiest in the United States as they are never more than 100 miles from a lake at any point. This means there is also fun looming right around the corner with a variety of different lakes to enjoy, outside of the 5 Great Lakes, there are other notable lakes within the Mitten state. Torch Lake which is Michigan's clearest and deepest lake is one of the more famous inland lakes, but this other lower peninsula lake is making a name for itself as the state's shallowest and largest lake in the state.

For those who can't swim or are not strong swimmers' beach/lake day can be scary for them as they feel either restricted to the beach or the shallowest part of the lake due to their lack in swimming skills. The currents of the lake, the waves, and the overall depth can be a few factors that can make a lake dangerous or make a swimmer timid, but this lake in Michigan doesn't have the same effect.

Houghton lake is located in Roscommon County, Michigan, which is almost exactly in the center of the lower peninsula just north of Mt Pleasant and is only miles away from Higgins Lake. Houghton Lake in Roscommon County, Michigan is the shallowest and largest lake in the entire state. Houghton Lake has an average depth of 7.5 feet and it's deepest point is only 22.5 feet which is along the lake's East Bay.

Don't let the shallow depth of this lake fool you, Houghton Lake is the largest inland lake in Michigan as it spreads well over 20,000 acres of land. There are estimated to be over 11,000 inland lakes in Michigan alone and Houghton Lake managed to be not only the shallowest but the largest as well.
