One of the most important jobs that we have as humans is to correctly dispose of the items that we use in our everyday lives, or we will harm the Earth. As we can all see, we haven't been the best at that as we have a serious littering problem all over the world, pollution continues to rise, and we have landfills all over the place. A lot of this is because we aren't properly disposing things, more importantly waste.

Drainage systems around the world were created to help alleviate some of these problems and they have been improved on a regular basis to ensure that they are working in the best shape possible. This doesn't mean that we can be lazy as humans and just put anything into our sewage system.

As we are finding out, many of the decisions we choose to make have adverse effects. The only things that should be going down the drains in your home or other places should be liquids. Not every liquid should go down your drain but things like water, soap, drinks, bleach and other things like that are acceptable.

Many times, people here in Michigan are putting prohibited items or substances down their drains and it causes backups and clogs within the pipes. Once the pipes are clogged enough the sewage system begins to overflow onto the streets and nearby land. This has happened multiple times within the last week in Kalamazoo County.

The first instance was from individuals pouring used cooking grease down their drain which people don't realize will harden when it is in pipes and cause clogging. They advised that anyone who drove through the water or had contact with it should wash their hands, cars, clothes, bodies and everything else to be safe.

The other instance was in the Bronson Blvd neighborhood near Downtown Kalamazoo. There was no cause given as to why the blockage occurred but over 300 galloons seeped out of the system and was eventually cleaned up by city crews. Drivers were also urged to sanitize their vehicles if they drove through the overflown sewage waste.
