A Hip-Hop Version of The Nutcracker Coming To Grand Rapids, Lansing & Detroit
When Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky originally composed The Nutcracker, based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, there's no way he could have imagined the versions people could create from it. One such version is a Hip-Hop version of this ballet coming to Michigan for Christmas time.
That's right, The Nutcracker is getting a brand new dope-ass remix, and it'll be coming to Grand Rapids on November 26th, then hitting the road before circling back to Michigan, playing in Lansing on December 6th, and then in Detroit on December 9th. this modern-day adaption of the ballet is no doubt going to be unique, as they describe:
A holiday mash-up for the whole family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker returns for another spectacular tour. Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Jennifer Weber, this contemporary dance spectacle is a re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, smashing hip-hop dance and Tchaikovsky’s timeless music together into a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event.
About The Cast of Hip Hop Nutcracker
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is brought to life by a powerhouse cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set.
From what we know about the plot, it will mainly remain the same, but there may be some sprinklings of modern themes placed in the show, so fans of the original ballet should expect a different approach while staying true to the original storytelling experience.
