Is It Illegal To Ride In The Bed of A Pick-Up Truck In Ohio?
If you grew up with a parent with a pickup truck, you knew the front of hopping in the bed of the pickup truck and driving down the road with the wind blowing in your hair. Something about that feeling is inherently American feeling. But as time goes on, and as other drivers get more distracted, we realize that’s probably not the safest thing for people to do nowadays.
But are there any laws that have been put into place that indicate that you’re not allowed to ride in the bed of a pickup truck anymore? In Ohio alone, there are roughly 1.65 million pickup trucks that are registered, making them one of the most popular vehicles in the state.

According to the Public Safety of Ohio in 2018, there were more than 59,000 pickup truck crashes and unfortunately, 249 of them had fatalities and nearly 14,000 injuries. So it’s safe to say you probably shouldn’t ride in the bed of a pickup truck, as a state what the actual law is:
Drivers and passengers should practice safety when riding in these vehicles. Space limitations often lead passengers to ride in the cargo area. Ohio’s open cargo law restricts the transporting of passengers in the open cargo area of most vehicles. The law prohibits people under the age of 16 from riding in an enclosed area of a vehicle traveling faster than 25 mph .
There Is ONE Exception
The answer is no, but as the law states, there IS one exception to this. Unless you’re performing some kind of highway, street, or construction work that gives you the authority to ride in the cargo area or a tailgate of a vehicle.
