Detroit police have arrested a man who allegedly beat a pit bull puppy and left it in a trash can after the dog broke his sunglasses.

Video Goes Viral

The video recording of the March 1 incident wasn't posted on social media until Monday of this week (3/20). Shortly after the clip was made public, Detroit police saw it and were able to track down the 29-year-old man seen in the video. He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with multiple counts related to animal cruelty.

Reports indicate that the man filmed himself issuing the beating to the animal, whose name is 'Lady.'

Details of the Incident

The dog's owner, whose identity was concealed when she spoke with Detroit's WJBK-TV, said the man tried to apologize and said that he had overreacted. The woman says his remorse doesn't justify his actions. She is the one who posted the video on social media.

The man is seen hitting the puppy and throwing it, all the while screaming about his broken sunglasses. He holds the broken glasses up while the dog is seen lying motionless on her side in the video.

A small portion of the graphic video is included in the news clip below.

Lady survived the beating and is currently in the care of the Michigan Humane Society.

Statement From the Michigan Humane Society

The MHS issued the following statement, which was posted on WJBK's website along with more details of the story.

"On March 16, 2023, the Michigan Humane Cruelty Investigators received a tip regarding the possible beating and abuse of a puppy on Detroit’s west side that allegedly occurred on March 1, 2023. Our investigators responded to the complaint and performed a wellness check on the puppy, who was left in the care of her owner, and is not currently, nor has ever been, in the care of Michigan Humane. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the accused, who is currently in custody. We’re working in conjunction with the Detroit Police Department on charges relating to the animal cruelty complaint.

"As this is an ongoing investigation, we will not be providing further comment at this time."
