Remember the formula shortage just a few months ago?  Remember when we all learned that only one or two companies make baby formula in the United States?  Well, now we have that same company with a new warning, issue.

Abbott is the company producing many popular formulas like Similac, plus Similac Sterilized Water and even Pedialyte Electrolyte Solution.  One of the factories for production is located in Sturgis, MI.  The factory causing the recall is based in Columbus, OH.

Many variations of the Similac & Pedialyte brands are included in this recall--it's important to remember it's centered around liquid products.  Critical information like lot numbers, specific product names and dates of production, here.  The recall is due to bottle caps not being secure which may have caused spoilage.

Abbott Laboratories produces formula / nutritional products along with medical devices, generic drugs, Ensure, Glucerna and many other products.  According to a PBS news story during the formula shortage:

"About 98% of the formula consumed in the U.S. is produced domestically, whether by a U.S. or international company. While facilities abroad such as those in Mexico, Chile, Ireland and the Netherlands meet the FDA’s nutrition standards, a failure to meet its labeling guidelines prevents them from exporting to the U.S."

Considering we, as humans & parents care deeply about the health of our children -- how have we allowed only one or two companies to safely produce baby food/formula for our children?  Back in the day, monopolies and duopolies would have been denied by the Federal Trade Commission or Department of Justice for such an important industry.  For now, it appears baby formula will be like the American Pro Sports -- A government-approved monopoly.

Food for thought:  We should consider how important this issue could be and demand competition!
