KDPS responded swiftly and ended a situation that could have escalated. Citizens were also quick to show support for brave law enforcement personnel.

A frightening downtown Kalamazoo incident left the suspect dead and a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer injured on March 12. Credit a bullet-proof vest and putting into practice the extensive training officers receive to the situation not escalating.

KDPS is very thankful for the outpouring of community support after today's incident. We ask for patience as we continue this investigation as we aim to be as transparent as possible as the investigation progresses. Above all, we are truly grateful that our officer is going to be okay and for all of the brave men and women who worked tirelessly to resolve this incident. Their heroic actions on a daily basis do not go unnoticed.
