Beef In Pop-Tarts, Mini-Wheats Sparks Hindu Complaints To Kellogg’s

The Kellogg Company is under fire after an American Hindu organization learned that several of their products contained beef gelatin without explicitly being labeled as such.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that Head of the Universal Society of Hinduism Rajan Zed called for the resignation of Kellogg CEO John Bryant in a news release, and for a complete recall of all products that contain beef but are not labeled as containing beef. Many Hindus abstain from eating cow; a principal in Hinduism and many Indian religions is “ahimsa”, or non-violence, a philosophy that often points to respect for cows and other typical food-animals.

CEO Bryant has yet to respond publicly, but the Battle Creek company has put out a statement saying that gelatin is clearly labeled on their packaging, and details of what kind of gelatin are in products can be seen at Openforbreakfast.com.

According to that website, products that contain beef include all frosted Pop-Tarts and cereals like Frosted Mini-Wheats and Rice Krispies Treats.
