I have been talking about our countries struggle with personal liberty and immorality for quite a while now.  I believe these are very important principles that our country appears to be letting slip away.  Without these beliefs we will make bad decisions, which will result in bad outcomes.  These bad outcomes will negatively affect us and our country, which ultimately means our children.

I then came across a great article by Walter Williams published in Townhall.com where he addresses this same issue.  He believes that our “immorality and contempt for liberty lie at the root of most of the political economic problems our nation faces”.

He believes that such large issues like our deficits at the federal, state and local level is explained by our “contempt” for liberty and our “immorality” as well as the belief that our government has the right to force one American to serve another.

I definitely agree with him.  As I have been saying on my program recently, if we do not change our beliefs, we will not change our decisions and thus our outcomes will not change.

When it comes to using the government to force one American to serve another he gives a great example:

Suppose there is an elderly widow in your neighborhood. She does not have the strength to mow her lawn, clean her windows and perform other household tasks. Plus she does not have the financial means to hire someone to perform them. Here is my question:  Would you support a government mandate that forces one of your neighbors to mow the widow's lawn, clean her windows and perform other household tasks?  Moreover, if the person so ordered failed to obey the government mandate, would you approve of some sort of sanction, such as a fine, property confiscation or imprisonment?”

I think most intelligent thinking people would believe this not right, it is a form of slavery as Mr. Williams puts it.  This would be denounced by most people.

So the question then is instead of forcing someone to perform the act, how about just forcing them to contribute to a fund which the elderly neighbor can then use to pay someone to perform those same duties.  Would people have the same thought that it is not right? Would it be denounced?  I believe most people would want this elderly neighbor to be helped, but not mandated by the government.

So what does the government do? They use verbal gymnastics to cover up what they are doing.  Words as Mr. William’s put it such as “spread the wealth, income redistribution and caring for the less fortunate”.

What I attempt to do every day on my program is to change the belief systems of people to then change their decisions which will help change the outcomes to better America.  If we do not change our beliefs, our outcomes from the decisions made will not change, thus we will continue down the path we are currently on.

Let’s talk about this today on The Live with Renk Show which airs Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon.  To let me know your thoughts during the show please call (269) 441-9595.
