As we try to figure out the rules to sheltering in place and what is essential, Attorney General Dana Nessel has cautioned Menards about questionable practices.

Contending the Stay Home, Stay Safe order requires businesses "to temporarily limit or suspend on-site operations to only those necessary to sustain or protect life," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says Menards is putting their employees and the public in danger. In a video released on April 1, she addressed the situation directly, saying,

The current climate should not be viewed through the lens of business opportunism where dollars drive decisions over the good of the public’s health. We have asked that Menards cease any and all practices that run contrary to the spirit and intent of the Governor’s Stay Home, Stay Safe Order, including marketing sales to draw large numbers of the general public into their stores for non-emergency purposes.

Menards, and other similar home improvement stores like Lowe's and Home Depot, are only allowed to supply goods to the general public that are “necessary to maintain and improve the safety, sanitation and essential operations of a residence,” and should have as few employees as needed to support those sales. AG Nessel also reminds shoppers that it is "essential to practice social distancing and limit the number of people you take with you."
