The flu shot can save your life

Flu season began Oct. 1 and now at the start of November there has been a reported death from the sickness. The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Oakland county's heath division announced a 69-year-old man is dead due to the flu. In the wake of the death the Oakland County Health Division recommends...

Everyone over the age of 6 months receive an influenza vaccination and take preventative measures such as washing their hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand rub when water is not available.

The flu is a nasty illness that is passed easily between people. The flu virus can spread to others as far as six feet away, mainly when infected people sneeze, cough, or talk.

The flu usually occurs suddenly, and people can experience some or all of the common symptoms:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults)

The Detroit Free Press passed along some important information to know about getting vaccinated..." When you do receive the flu shot  every year decreases the risk of becoming sick. In addition, vaccinations lowers the severity of the illness, complications and protects the community".

It is worrisome that last year, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported an increase in flu activity. I wonder if this year will have an increase of people catching the flu.
