As uncertainty grows about when Michigan schools will reopen, the Michigan Department of Education has been approved to waive federal requirements for testing and student accountability.

State Board of Education President Dr. Casandra Ulbrich and State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice have urged Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to waive the requirements this year as coronavirus concerns have shuttered Michigan schools since March 16.

Governor Gretchen weighed in, saying schools will face a huge task getting kids back on track when they return to school.

“It’s time for Betsy DeVos to do the right thing on behalf of our students and waive statewide assessments,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “When our kids get back to school, our number one priority must be ensuring they have the resources they need to get back on track.”
