With the latest celebrity sharing their story about a child drowning, we thought it was important to post these tips.

Country music star Granger Smith shared the most heartbreaking news on his Instagram last week - his 3-year-old son, River, passed away after a "tragic accident" which was later revealed to be a drowning accident at home.

We wanted to post this because we, too, opened up our pool over the weekend. Summers are hard, parents. We totally know it and we feel your pain. There's no harm in sitting next to the pool with your kids (if they know how to swim) and taking a load off, but NEVER, under ANY circumstances, leave them unattended.

Drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-4 in the United States, so this isn't an isolated incident.

Here are a few more things to remember:

1.Set up pool and spa barriers and alarm. In some states, it's the law. For Michigan's codes & laws, click HERE.

2. Make sure your pool drains are covered

3. Get your children into swimming lessons ASAP

4. Never rely on floaties or water wings

5. Make sure your water is clean so your kids don't get sick and so you can see them underwater

6. Understand what "dry" or "secondary drowning" is and the warning signs to watch for

7. Know that drowning does NOT look like it does in the movies. Read more HERE.
