When National Geographic announced their top Unexpected Cities for the Food Lover for each continent on the planet, their entry for North America was especially unexpected!  When people suggest great places to go get a good meal, the Motor City is usually not on the top of the list, especially when it has a whole continent worth of cities to compete with.

So, if you haven't guessed it by now, Detroit was named THE TOP Unexpected City for the Food Lover for North America.  Having grown up in Metro Detroit, I can definitely attest to the great food in South East Michigan.

The first thought that comes to mind when thinking of Detroit food is the Coney Dog.  Detroit is the birthplace of the famous Detroit-style Coney Island Hot Dogs and it is pretty much required that you stop and grab one if you are in the area.  Don't worry about having to search for these Coney Islands either, they are pretty much on every corner of the street.

Detroit just isn't Coney Dogs either.  The city is home to several ethnic neighborhoods that boast cuisine from all over the globe.  Head down to Hamtramck for great Polish Food, stop by Greektown to eat dishes from the neighborhood's namesake, or explore Dearborn for some of the best Middle Eastern food in the nation!

Detroit is also a huge pizza and BBQ city as well.  Detroit is home to several huge pizza chains, as well as some regional joints like Buddy's that have put the Detroit-style Deep Dish Pizza on the map!  And Slows Bar B Q has been one of the most popular BBQ joints in the city, so much so that we now can enjoy their amazing BBQ right here in Grand Rapids!

And finally, if you enjoy good Deli food, then you are in for a treat!  Some of the best Deli's in the country can be found in and around the Metro Detroit area.

National Geographic also named the top Unexpected Cities for the Food Lover for Asia, Europe, South America, Africa, and Australia.  You can check out the other top cities on their website.
