New Greenhouse On Tribal Land To Provide ‘Growth’ Of Several Kinds
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon at the Pine Creek Reservation for the upcoming construction of a large new greenhouse on the tribal land located near Athens. The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi and FireKeepers Casino Hotel hosted the event, introducing the innovative plan that aims to feed local students healthy foods and help them learn more about agriculture in the process.
The initiative is an extension of The Fire Hub restaurant in downtown Battle Creek as the greenhouse will be utilized to grow food for salad items that will feed Athens school district faculty and students. Long-term goals include expanding to additional local school districts and to use the site of the greenhouse for school field trips. It would aim to help students who are interested in farming and gardening to 'get their hands dirty' and learn about what goes into that field of work.
Senior Management of FireKeepers Casino Hotel joined their owners, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi and Fire Hub restaurant leaders to introduce the greenhouse concept. Then a symbolic planting of seeds officially concluded the groundbreaking for the greenhouse.
